The Bosch CIS fuel injection system was the fuel delivery system used by Mercedes from 1976 through 1994 on most vehicles produced. The CIS injection system relied on a fuel pump to deliver constant fuel pressure to a fuel distributor mounted on top of an air flow meter. Intake air passing through the air flow meter would move a vane within the air flow meter to determine air volume entering the engine and letting the fuel distributor know how much fuel each cylinder will need. Once the fuel distributor delivers enough fuel pressure to a particular fuel injector, the injector opens delivering fuel to the cylinder. If the fuel pump fails, not enough fuel will flow to build pressure for the CIS injection system to operate, if any fuel flows at all.
